Storm Sails;

The rules for stormsails are as follows;

Storm Trysail: A short triangular sail that is attached to back of the
mast and is sheeted to the deck. The area of the storm trysail cannot be
more than 0.175(PxE). The ORC states, “It shall be sheeted independently
of the boom and shall have neither a headboard nor battens and be of
suitable strength for the purpose.” If you ever plan to set a storm
trysail, it is best to have a separate track on the mast for the sail.
In a gale, the last thing you want to do is remove the mainsail from the
mast to bend on the storm trysail.

Storm Jib: Its area is limited to five percent of the height of the
foretriangle squared. The rule states that the luff of the storm jib
must be shorter than 65 percent of the height of the foretriangle.

Heavy Weather Jib: Its area is limited to 13.5 percent of the height of
the foretriangle squared. The ORC rules state that this sail cannot have
reef points. If either the storm jib or heavy weather jib are made to
fit a luff-groove device, the sail must have an alternative means of
being attached to the stay. The most common alternative method is to
have grommets along the luff so that you can tie the sail to the stay.

Customer Comments;

Hi Brad
I got my sail last week and have sailed it twice.  Great job! the sail looks good, flies good, and has met my every expectation .  My business partner has been so impressed with the quality of your sails, I expect he will be buying a full set for his boat before he goes cruising next year.
Len

Hi Brad,
Received sails Friday 10th September just before we travelled for the weekend to our son's wedding. So have only opened them today Monday the 13th, and have looked at the jib and foregaff in the confines of our lounge, ( it is hail, rain and full gale here ).
I t may be some weeks before I am able to hoist them because of work required on masts and standing rigging. But, I would like to say how pleased I am with the workmanship, it could not have been better had I been stood at the elbow of the sailmaker. Please pass our thanks on your sailmakers!
Many thanks for all your patience and sympathetic understanding, as soon as they are set I shall e-mail a picture to you.

Once again many thanks and best wishes.

Les

Dear Brad

I have received the sail in Tahiti in good cndition,  It arrived yesterday: Cutoms tax was nil,  Thanks for all your help,

Brad, got the main sail last Wed., it fit like a glove and sailed like a arrow. Thanks a millon. Let me get the measurements and we can start on the ginny.

Dear Brad,

I received the new Mainsail in Tahiti, without any problems.  Customs was fine and I am very pleased with the speed of delivery.  The new Mainsail was a perfect fit according to the information I sent you.  I have the opportunity to sail with the new sail and I am very pleased with its shape and performance.  I am also able to hoist it fully by hand and need only a few cranks of the winch handle to bring it up tight, something I couldn't do with the heavy old sail.

Thanks again for all your help and for sending a great sail as you promised.

Yours truly,   Jean-Louis LePendu

Brad Gunther - Fareast Sails,

On a recent visit from Ireland my friend Dermot with hivarengineering informed me of his recent purchase of a great quality sail at a great price for his 36 foot sail boat from you.

He has forwarded to me a copy of all the communications and details with you re that purchase.

I have, as a hobby here in Sausalito, CA. where I live, an 83 foot, cutter rig, 50 ton old wooden sail boat in need of a new mainsail and genoa jib, plus possibly other sails later.

The mainsail has approximately an 86 foot luff and about a 39 foot foot, all with old merriman bronze track slides, reuseable large headboard and tack and clew rings, I have still in good condition from my old main made in 1958 by Kenneth Watts in Los Angeles.

The mast is 103 feet, 7 below deck and 96 above all strong and sound ready for a new mainsail to be sailed in the strong winds of the San Francisco bay.

Fareastsails appears to be very capable of building sails of this size and weight.

Are you desirous of giving me details and/or a quote on the above?

Sincerely,

Ron MacAnnan

Brad,
Sail arrived today, looks great and everything is
exactly like the specifications. Weather is suppose
to be clear and 69 degrees tomorrow so I will be
testing the sail on the lake.
If they sail as good as they look I will be ordering a
genoa later this spring.
Thanks for all your help.
Warren

Brad,
Tested the sail yesterday and it was perfect, plan to
order more later in the spring and send my sailing
friends business your way.
Thank again,
Warren

Hi Brad.
I received my No 2 Genoa yesterday, so far I have only unrolled it in my house. From what I have seen the quality and finish is excellent. If it performs as good as it looks I shall be over the moon.
Many thanks to you and your company for the very efficient and prompt way that you have produced my sail.
I shall certainly be using your company again and will also recommend you to other members in our sailing club.
Many thanks.

Dear Brad,
Just wanted to thank you for your help in getting the sail. It is beautiful and the fit is like a glove. I would appreciate some specifics regarding the recommended size of batten that best fits the pocket. I am likely being a bit over cautious but I don't want to get it wrong. If there are specs of the sail with this information, just forward the info to me
Again thanks
Edward Drohan, Ph.D.

Dear Brad I'm finally back in Italy and I found your sail (order number

experienced sailor.

Hello Brad
Congratulation !
I tested my new sail this last week end and really enjoyed it
Good job !
Dimensions and colors are quite good and I'm really happy with that from broad reach to full and by
Next step would be a symetrical one...
I just have now to use it cleverly ! First occasion this week end : eighteen hours race inside our local "Bassin d'Arcachon" sea site
Hoping this realisation will bring you many new orders...
Best regards
Philippe

Dear Brad,

Just a quick note to tell you I received the sail on time. Wow, I am so

Brad,

I received my 135 genny this week and was able to put her on today.  What a beauty!!  I really appreciate your communication with me during the ordering process.  I could not have gotten just what I wanted without your help.  I am absolutely ecstatic with the sail.  I had my Hunter 35 pushing 9 knots today in a 20 knot wind!  Wow!  This is the second sail I have bought from The Wolfbay Group (Far East Sails) and would highly recommend you to any of my fellow sailors.

Thank You!  Fareast did such a fantastic job on the main for my S2 that I'd love to get a whole new set of sails for the Columbia.  I've done alot of browsing to get some specs on sail dimensions off the internet for quotation purposes.  But when it comes to filling out the order I'll verify every measurement with as much detail as possible.  Would love to get a new genoa and main before May.  Best Regards

From San Franciso, USA

Hi Brad,

I got the main last friday and I put it on yesterday, which was a lovely day here in San Francisco, and the main fit like a glove and looked perfect. I just would like to thanks for the attention that you have given me in the sales dept.. and to let you know that my experience with you and the sailmakers so far has been great and I will let others know that. So, on to the next project, I hope you got my last mail and understood what kind of spinnaker (gennaker) that I am looking for. I will take off for Australia later this month (not with my boat, that will happen later this year) and be gone for about a month, so it would be great to be able to order the sail before I leave.

Take care,

 Hi Brad.

I just wanted to say that I have received my new genoa, and it looks all right. The measurements were correct, and when I was out the other day, the form of the sail looked fine, although it was difficult to make it flat enough when reefed.

The next sail I will need is a genaker, and I will come back to you then.

Best regards Torfinn Espedal

Received my sails and wanted to thank you again for your service and for your help in ordering the sails that I needed. The main fits perfectly and the old boat sails like a dream with it. Please add me to that list and rest assured that if you ever need a reference for your sails or services, I will stand ready to provide same.

From Glasgow, Scotland
I tried out the new mainsail at the weekend and was very pleased with
the results. The sail fits perfectly and performed well in very gusty
conditions up to force 6, for my first sail of the season down the Clyde
to my mooring, without any problems and has transformed the performance
of my boat. The reefing points and loose foot all worked well. Just one
small point do you have any tips for removing the creases caused by
folding for transport.

Sails arrived after a little fight with FedEx Bahamas but not too bad.

All hanked on and looking great, they look really well made and I'm very pleased. Expect a few more orders from the Yacht Haven at Nassau, lots of envious eyes on the dock when they went up.

The only thing missing now is some wind! it's been hot as hell here for a fortnight now and no sign of a breeze to try them out with.

I am not sure who to reply to but I think this was the last email I got

I recieved my order of a heavy working jib for a commercial, sail
assisted, west coast tuna troller some time ago. I have been very busy
since then and was not able to rig the jib until yesterday. I just wanted
to say that we are very pleased with the product. It will require just a
few minor improvements of the jack line arrangement but I expected to do
that anyway. I look forward to sending you dimensions of my mainsail and
maybe another jib sometime after the summer tuna season.

We just wanted to thank you for a fine product at a reasonable price.

Hi guys,

Well I finally got to unpack the sail and fit to the yacht. It is a very nice job and I can find no fault, (although I have not been to sea with it yet)

It is about 500mm short in height and about the same on the boom. This is no problem as in time I imagine there will be a little stretch and better to be a little short than too long. I still need to get the battens made, other wise I am ready to go on my trip to NZ, Tonga, Cook Is & Fiji.

Thanks a lot for your great service and you will be getting all my future business.

Brad,

I just wanted to let you know that I had received the sail in good order
very shortly after your last email and that everything was fine, in time
for the 2-week cruise I just came back from.

Thank you and the FarEast Sails team for the good work!

Regards
Luc

Hi, Brad,

Sails arrived this morning.  They look great, and I thank you very much.  I bent them on the boat earlier today, and everything seems to be in order.  I have a little more adjusting to do, but that said, should have a good idea if there are any problems within a day or so -- but I expect none.

Thanks again for all your help, and please pass my thanks along to the others who made this work.

Best Regards,

Allan

Hi Brad, you might remember me. I got a Main sail and Genoa off you for my boat at the start of the season. What an improvement they made to the boat, we even won our club regatta on the water and on handicap.
Anyway i am looking into getting a spinnaker. the boat is masthead rigged and lenght of mast about 40foot. Could you please give me a quote for above sail.
Yours gratefully,
Robert McFadden.

Code 1:
For light air reaching. It is for basically the same conditions as what you now know as a VMG spinnaker, going downwind in conditions light enough that you have to sail tighter apparent wind angles, 60 to 90 degrees apparent.

Code 2:
Medium air running. It is used in the same conditions as a symmetrical AP spinnaker, 90 to 135 degrees apparent, for going downwind from 8 knots to 20 knots.

Code 3:
Medium air reaching spinnaker. Used for reaching in 10 to 20 knots apparent, the wind angle where you can carry it will vary with wind speed but generally between 70 and 110 degrees apparent.

Code 4:
Heavy air runner. Full size, used for running in 20 to 30 knots.

Code 5:
Heavy air reaching for over 20 knots.

Code 6:
Storm runner for over 30 knots.

Code 0:
The Code 0 is a specialty tight reaching sail, and can also double as a heavy air spinnaker. Current rules require the midgirth to be at least 75% of the foot, which is meant to prevent making a 180% genoa and calling it a spinnaker. (On a genoa the midgirth has to be 50% or less of the foot) They are made with the luff as close to straight as possible, and the shape as flat as possible, without having so much roach on the leech that it flaps too much. In light air they can be flown with an apparent wind angle as tight as 40 degrees.
